V-Log: Happy 20th Anniversary Power Rangers!
August 28th, 2013 marks the 20th Anniversary of a franchise that changed my life. In 1993, I started watching the show when it first aired on Fox Kids. I, along with every single other kid in my school and neighborhood became engrossed in the series, and being the kid I was, bought all the toys. I kept with the series until Lost Galaxy. The shift away from the Zordon Legacy, along with a mild distaste toward Lost Galaxy’s designs, combined with a growing interest in other franchises and hobbies, pushed me out of Power Rangers. Flash ahead to S.P.D. I had been reading up on Power Rangers after finding my way towards Ranger Central after searching Johnny Yong Bosch. My buddy Jeff had kept watching the show, and he showed me the Legacy of Power episode of Dino Thunder. I decided to give it another chance, caught up with S.P.D., and really loved what I saw. I went backwards and started watching the previous seasons I had missed, and watching the reruns on Toon Disney everyday I could. After meeting a lot of Rangerboarders (and the S.P.D. cast) at Youmacon, I cemented my place in the fandom and have stuck with the show ever since.
A friend I made at Youmacon, Grant, introduced me to Kamen Rider Kiva, which led me to the Kamen Rider franchise. When Power Rangers was all but dead after RPM, I decided to jump into the world of Super Sentai with Samurai Sentai Shinkenger. It’s here I decided to get into toy reviewing, and when I really became engrossed in the tokusatsu communities. If it wasn’t for Power Rangers, I would have never even known about tokusatsu, and without tokusatsu, I’m not sure where or what I would be doing today. I’ve made so many friends, and met so many awesome people in this fandom through Power Rangers, Super Sentai, and Kamen Rider. I would never have gotten into toy reviewing, and I wouldn’t be making money from doing something I love so much.
This V-Log isn’t just wishing Power Rangers a 20th Anniversary, but it’s also a shout out to all the amazing people I’ve met over the years in this fandom. Yeah, this fandom irritates me more than anything in the world sometimes, but the amount of awesome people I know here surely outweigh the irritants. You all know who you are, and you guys rock. Here’s to even more years for this franchise and tokusatsu in general. I’m not sure where I’d be if these silly spandex wearing super heroes never appeared on my television.
I just really hope the show becomes enjoyable again…that would help…
